Your first German winter without losing the shape of your week

Simple routines for daylight, Lüften, clothing, movement, and social contact during a first winter in Germany.

A snowy German street in winter

Winter can quietly remove the cues that once organised your day. Darkness arrives before work ends, spontaneous street life thins out, and staying home becomes the easiest option.

Put daylight in the calendar

Check sunrise and sunset weekly. A short outdoor break around midday can be more realistic than waiting for a bright afternoon. Layer clothing so the first cold minute does not decide the whole outing.

German homes also need regular ventilation. Many residents open windows fully for a short period rather than leaving them tilted all day. Follow your building guidance and watch for persistent condensation.

Make social plans specific: a Sunday walk, a shared meal every second Wednesday, or a regular call home. “We should meet sometime” is fragile in a season that rewards planning.

Low mood that persists or interferes with daily life deserves qualified medical attention. Cultural adaptation advice is useful, but it is not treatment.
